This pilot project was focussed around Bethune Way underpass and the nearby rail corridor. The idea was to replace some of the existing sycamores, with more interesting species that would support more local fauna, and give more visual interest throughout the year. Selection was based on Network Rail’s list of approved species for use near to operational railways, including Larch, Field Maple, Holly, Holm Oak, Mountain Ash, and Pine. A planting program near an operational railway can be vulnerable, because of the uncertain Network Rail maintenance regimes that either cut everything down or spray with herbicides.
