A convincing town centre Greenway is not feasible unless it can be located within the existing rail corridor. The rail corridor currently contains sufficient surplus hardstandings and marginal land to fit a safe Greenway link alongside the operational railway..

Rail Corridor

The Greenway concept is attractive because most of the town centres flagship regeneration projects (Station, College, Health Centre, Surestart, University and Superstore) are all located within or close to the railway. A key aim of the Greenway link is to create a special civic scale precinct to meet new academic, civic and community needs.

A key current project is to liaise with Network Rail (NR) on the best way to deliver a safe rail-corridor based greenway alongside an operational railway.NR (who support the Greenway project) need to complete a Greenway impact study that will determine if the Greenway can meet railway asset-protection conditions, deliver added value for NR, and continue NR’s unique role as an urban regeneration cataylyst around stations in Hastings, Ore and in St Leonards.East Sussex County Council’s Walking & Cycling Plan, supported & endosed by Hastings Borough Council, Hub,Sustrans and others now supports the town centre rail corridor link.
